"Why," you ask? Because we want profile pages to have freedom of customization, but also to have some consistency. This way, when anyone visits a deviant, they know they can always find the art in the top left, and personal info in the top right.
Don't forget, restraints can bring out the creativity in you!

I thought deviantart.com was set up so artists could recieve advice, feedback, a public opinion of your art. I suppose people could make a popularity contest out of it, but popularity is not the artist's domain. The artist's domain is either in self expression, storytelling, or craft(technique)(building a boat can be seen as art).
Take lessons from various fields of life. For instance, yoga teaches "honor where you are". No one picks up a pen and writes a literary classic on their first try. Don't be ashamed of your skill level. Time and practice hone your skills.
I remember when I first visited deviantart, there were thousands upon thousands of animé artists who were beginners(and it showed). Maybe it wasn't the prettiest drawing on earth but you know, it was good. deviantart gives us a unique opportunity to recieve feedback and advice to help us improve our skills.
Nothing "sucks" in art.

If an elephant's paint dabs on canvas can sell for multiple thousands of dollars and be called art(and this is a true story), then a human being who puts genuine EFFORT in drawing anything at all, is a masterpiece.
